Veteran and lifelong Gillette resident Billy Montgomery is running for Mayor. Read his announcement on bringing trusted, hands-on leadership to our city.

For nearly 50 years, Gillette has been more than just a place on a map—it is the place where I have raised my family, built my career, and served alongside my neighbors. Today, I am proud to formally announce my candidacy for Mayor of Gillette. I am running because I believe in our city’s future, and I know that with steady, experienced leadership, we can meet the challenges ahead while protecting the character that makes our community so special.
My journey to this moment began at 17, when I volunteered for the U.S. Army. That early experience as a combat veteran in the 101st Airborne Division taught me that true leadership is about integrity and looking out for the person standing next to you. Whether it was my 34-year career with the BNSF Railroad, my time as a Deputy Coroner, or my nine years serving on the City Council, my focus has always been on being a “workhorse, not a showhorse”—doing the hard, honest work to serve the people of this city.
I am honored by the recent coverage my campaign has received, including features in both the Gillette News Record and County 17. As the press recently highlighted, my campaign is centered on the belief that leadership is about “showing up, putting in the work, and being accountable to the people”. I am committed to putting our community first, keeping people ahead of politics, and ensuring that our planning today allows the next generation to thrive right here in Gillette.
This campaign isn’t about me; it’s about us. It’s about ensuring our infrastructure is reliable, our economy is resilient, and our families feel supported. I am asking you to join me on this journey. Whether you can put a sign in your yard, volunteer a few hours, or contribute to the campaign, your help makes all the difference.
Together, we can build a stronger, safer, and more united city. Let’s get to work.
